10 Ways To Make Your Swimming Pool More Environmentally Friendly

eco-friendly-swimming-poolOne would have a hard time denying that swimming pools are some of the most wonderful and luxurious comforts in life. Merely at a touch of warm and soft water our bodies relax and minds blend with the basic elements of nature. However, maintaining a pool in the backyard is not a cheap proposition, neither financially, nor environmentally.

When my husband Ed and I decided to install a family swimming pool, we looked for things we could do to make our pool less taxing on the resources. Here are 10 ways we have found to make our pool more eco friendly:

1) Efficient heating. We love to swim during the months when it gets a bit chilly, so we installed a solar heater. We cut down on the amount of fuel we use to warm the pool. It also saves on our energy costs, and I love that part.

2) An insulated pool cover. When we’re not using the pool, the cover keeps it warm and prevents loss of heat. After a long discussion about cost, Ed won and got a pool cover with a push button mechanism. Sometimes I think he (more…)

Biofuel as Renewable Energy Resource to Homeowners?

Pollution is getting worse as time pass and we are already suffering from its negative effects. The harsh weather conditions, climate “weirdness” and the large hole of the ozone layer that makes us exposed from the harmful UV rays of sunlight, all of these happen because of air pollution.  People are already aware of this and are turning to cleaner and renewable energy sources.  What most are not aware of yet is that energy sources such as biofilm is already available for homeowners to heat their homes.

Why Renewable Energy

Renewable energy refers to energy derived from our natural resources. Some forms of renewable energy are wind, sunlight, geothermal heat, tides, rain, biofuel and many more. The term “renewable” indicates that these forms of energy replenish naturally.   The reason why renewable energy is getting popular is because unlike petroleum that produces carbon emissions and can alter the atmosphere, this type of energy is clean.

The Benefit of Biofuel to Homeowners

The usage of biofuel is not limited to cars and other complex type of machineries that is petroleum-based.  In fact, you can use it in your simple home equipment as well.  One example of the most common home equipment where biofuel is usable – is fireplaces.

Although fireplaces, does not rely on petroleum for fuel, using wood to heat up your fireplaces, will require (more…)

3 Surprising Benefits of New Prefabricated Eco-Friendly Homes

The mkLotus prefab green home - the latest design by Michelle Kaufmann Designs

Prefabricated homes aren’t really that new of a concept in the building market. For many decades now, modular prefabricated homes have been built and sold as a less expensive alternative to buying a home on the market. The difference today is that prefab has become trendy. With a bit of an aesthetic facelift and a rebranding scheme, modular homes have become the hot new thing in home building and buying. As statistics on unemployment, a failing economy, crippling debt, soaring college costs, and so much more bombard our views, the thought of owning a house is almost impossible. Many young professionals struggle to pay off college loans well into their adulthood and years after they have completed their degrees. This causes major adult life steps like getting married, buying a house, and having children to get pushed back further and further. But, the prefab homes that are on the market today may be just the answer. Keeping many modern-day issues in mind, prefabricated eco-friendly homes have a lot of offer the young home buyer.

1. Inexpensive

One of the most enticing things about prefabricated homes is that they can really cut back on the price of purchasing and owning a home. Though not all prefabricated models are a cheaper option than buying an existing home, they can offer many aspects of financial relief. For one, many prefab eco-friendly home companies are focused on using reusable and highly efficient materials. By working hard to create the most energy efficient constructions, prefab homeowners can actually save a lot of money in the long run. Builders (and therefore owners) save money on materials using (more…)

8 Popular Energy Efficiency Upgrades that DON’T Save Energy or Cash

We all love a good myth. “Goldfish have a memory of only three seconds”, “Water drains backwards in the Southern Hemisphere due to the Earth’s rotation”, or maybe “A dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s”.  It’s all fun stuff until we actually spend cash on things that we thought will do us good but end up to be a complete waste of money.  This may come us no surprise but some very commonly believed energy upgrades seem to be just that – myths.

Rob Moddy is a fellow USGBC member who often whips out a masterful blog entry.  It’s just so hard not to share this one with you.  Here he highlights a talk given by building scientist Michael Blasnik at the Department of Energy’s National Weatherization Training Conference, particularly the problems with inaccurate computer models in determining weatherization strategies and effective home energy improvement measures.

As originally posted on GreenBuildingAdvisor.com, this is a list of common strategies for home weatherization that don’t save much energy. If you don’t want to waste your time and money, these are the strategies to avoid or closely evaluate: (more…)

Can Renting a Hybrid be a Much Better Deal than Driving Your Own Car?

If you are going on a long trip across a couple states for a week do you drive your own car or do you rent one?  Many people rent because they don’t like adding extra mileage on their cars.  Normally renting a car is a bit more expensive than driving your own but what about renting a hybrid?  Can the gas savings potentially offset the rental car costs?  As we found out during our recent trip to Nevada and Arizona, the answer is absolutely YES!

First, we weren’t sure what to do.  Alamo at San Jose Airport presented two options: to rent an economic mid-size car for a total of $180 per week or go for a hybrid for $220.  Considering the fact that we are thinking of buying a hybrid in the future, and the fact that our trip would leave a smaller pollution trail, we decided to have some fun and go for a hybrid – the brand spanking new Toyota Prius.

Man it was exciting to get into one of those.  Besides the fact that it took five minutes to figure out how to start the darn thing, the ride, the comfort, the dynamics is all really a joy in that car.  Cruising at low speeds in national parks and knowing that there is absolutely no emissions coming out of the pipe was nothing short of orgasmic.

It was a great trip but what about the bottom line on the numbers? (more…)

City from Heaven with Pollution from Hell

One would be miserable without a mask in Kathmandu

If you ever think that San Jose is polluted or is not “green” enough then keep reading… Last February I had a fortune to visit one of the most polluted cities in the world – Kathmandu. Air in Kathmandu is so polluted, you can taste it in your mouth and your skin smells like it for weeks after you leave the place. I am not even being sarcastic, it really was very fortunate circumstances that led me there and it was truly a trip of a lifetime.

Kathmandu is a capital city of Nepal. This magnificent country, situated just north of India, is beautiful, rich in culture and hosts one of the biggest treasures of our planet – the Himalayan Mountains and of course – the Everest, the rooftop of the world.

However, this story focuses on the darker side of that part of the world – overpopulation, pollution and overwhelming neglect of its environment. See, Kathmandu with all of its beauty is situated in the valley, just like the Silicon Valley but the major difference is (more…)

Cooking without Electricity – Solar Oven

sun ovenIn the heat of San Jose summer, most people don’t want to turn on their ovens unless it’s absolutely necessary. I know I don’t.  A lot of cooking is done with a microwave, but the air inside a microwave also heats up pretty good, and let’s face it, the food just does not taste as good.

One awesome way to avoid this extra heat and unnecessary use of resources is to use a solar oven.  I first discovered it when watching a show called “Living with Ed” on Planet Green.  The guy is green out of his mind and has all these fun ways of saving energy.  He has one of these solar ovens in his backyard which of course causes regular tension with his lovely wife who is a style freak.

So what is a solar oven, you’re asking yourself.  A solar oven or solar cooker is a device which uses sunlight as its energy source. It uses no fuel and they cost nothing to run.  It’s simply a box, lined with tin foil or other material, insulated on the outside to keep the heat inside, which sits out in a strategic position in your backyard, where it will get the most sun. Ever gotten into a car – especially a black one – after it’s been sitting in the sun for a few hours? It’s extremely (more…)
