Rookie’s Guide to Using Recycled and Upcycled Products to Decorate Your Home

Decorating with recycled materials

When it comes to home décor that has been recycled or upcycled, there are only two real questions most homeowners ask: why choose such products and what is available? Okay, in truth you might be wondering, for starters, just what the difference is between recycling and upcycling, so let’s have a little lesson to start you off right. When something is recycled it is either passed along as is to a new home or broken down so that the components can be used to create something else (often of lesser value). You might get a recycled chest of drawers at the Goodwill, or plastic bottles could be broken down to create plastic bags. Upcycling, on the other hand, takes something with little value and breaks it down to make items that are considered more valuable. You could tear old t-shirts into strips and weave them into raggy kitchen rugs, for example. Or the rubber from old shoes could be made into playground surfaces. So now that we’ve got that straightened out, why would you choose these products? And what kinds of items are out there?

There are a couple of good reasons to go for recycled and upcycled products when it comes to your home décor, not the least of which is supporting the health of the planet that in turn supports all human life. These cyclical production models not only (more…)

Tar Sands, Political Impotence, and Voodoo Science – Is Civil Unrest The Only Way Out?

Is Civil Unrest The Only Way Out?

Is the climate crisis is getting so severe that civil disobedience is justified to compel the federal government to confront the fossil fuel lobby?  This is the question that was raised at a recent panel discussion “Blessed 350″ at the Commonwealth Club.  The panel was moderated by Greg Dalton. The full audio is available at climate-one.org.

My name is Gary Latshaw, PhD and I wanted to share my notes from this event with as many people as possible; I believe you will find the thoughts expressed by the authors very interesting.  My notes are presented to you here in the form of bullet points.  Please chime in with your views and feelings about these issues in the comments and let’s have a discussion.

Guests: Paul Hawken, Author, Blessed Unrest and Bill McKibben, Founder, 350.org.  Both these authors are well-established environmental activists. The presentation was conducted as a panel discussion with the moderator posing questions to the two. At the end there was audience participation. I thought it was a very interesting discussion on climate issues – both the politics and the science. Here is what I captured. In parenthesis I have introduced some of my own thinking:

  • “Problem is that government policy has artificially increased consumption. There have been tax incentives for home ownership and government subsidies for freeways to get to all the homes. Thus, we have created a housing/work transportation design, which is very carbon-intensive (driving long distances) and now that carbon based fuels are expensive, it is an expensive design. Nevertheless, studies show people in cities have twice as many close friends as those in suburbia.
  • Financial meltdown will take 10-12 years. (I have heard this before. It is not clear to me that without substantial changes to our economy that simply waiting will relieve our problems. The Great Depression was not relieved for 12 years until (more…)

Conquering Fear by Embracing Something Larger Than Yourself

Some hate him, some love him, but this seems to be the trait of every person that sets out to make a change with a bang…  In his view, protection of the planet is more important than preserving his own life.  His name is Captain Paul Watson, founder of SeaShepherd organization.

Some criticize him for his pirate ways, but most applaud him for his ingenuity on getting the job done given the available resources.   Some critique him for not being civil but the  people from whom he protects defenseless creatures are insane.  As he says himself, his job is to “confront the hypocracy of humanity.”

Captain Watson has got to be the most controversial Environmental Activist on the planet right now. He says “We should measure the intellgince of human beings by ability to live in harmony with other species.”  Yep, sounds radical to the masses but I’m sure for most of us here, this is our mantra too.

I’d like to share with you a video that paints a portrait of a true environmental champion.  This is a long video, about 30 minutes but if you want to see what drives a truly passionate activist you’ll see it here.  His courage is contageous, his dedication is inspiring.   (If you also want to watch the video below Captain Watson’s speech then  use caution, it’s graphic and it really shows hell on earth and the true stupidity of the people committing the slaughter of those whales. Why do they undertake this carnage every year? Because of tradition – that’s right – tradition.  The footage will speak for itself).

The 10 Rules For Being Human and More

These days it’s easy to feel that worldly worries have sucked the winds from under our sails.  Everything from the economy imposed stress at work (or no work) to the most meaningless shows on TV produced to numb our minds can feel like eroding our soul and spontaneous joy.  And while it’s true that there could be a thousand reasons to feel disempowered there are two big ones to keep you going: You are not alone and this will change.  Remember this all day long, you are not alone going through this and everything is impermanent and will eventually change for the better.

A good friend e-mailed this video yesterday and I would like to return his kindness by sharing it with you.  It will require some open mindedness and an ability to read fast.  :-) The rules are from the Book ‘If Life Is A Game, These Are The Rules‘ By Author Cherie Carter-Scott.   I’ve also listed them in text below the video. Enjoy and stay empowered.

The 10 Rules For Being Human

Rule One – You will receive a body. Whether you love it or hate it, it’s yours for life, so accept it. What counts is what’s inside.

Rule Two – You will be presented with lessons. Life is a constant learning experience, which every day provides (more…)

Random Thoughts on Finding Your Own Place on the Planet

Don’t try to tackle all the issues, pick the closest to your heart, where you’re most likely to make a decent impact.  Most importantly – be brave, don’t be politically correct, have courage,  be the change you want others to be.  Mean what you say and don’t be mean when you say it.

Don’t fall in the extremes as those who do that are very vulnerable… do it from the heart.  When it gets tough, remember the others, do it for them, don’t expect rewards, don’t ask for recognition.  This is the way of a true eco warrior.

Stevie Wonder sang… “If you believe in things you don’t understand then you suffer.”  He’s awesome.  Get educated, see what’s really happening in the world, study the science yourself, go visit places!  Visit places in Asia, you’ll see much less subtle ways how humanity is wreaking havoc on the planet.  We’re all connected.

The biggest challenge facing the planet is overpopulation and all the demands on the resources that this brings with it.  Every new life will create a footprint.  When you have kids, don’t be selfish by having many.  Strive to live (more…)

Magnificent sights of Kuroshio Sea – 2nd Largest Aquarium Tank in the World

It’s easy to lose perspective these days.  Sometimes the real meaning behind our efforts simply drowns in concepts, ideas and daily routine.  As you watch this video that has already been viewed almost 5 million times, I hope it brings you home.  The place in your heart where you feel connected.  A place where you feel like your work and life have a purpose; where you are aligned with what truly matters in life.

Nature is so amazing, so harmonious, so beautiful and precious.  Even though this is a human made ocean floor in Japan, one can not help not to marvel at the unrushed scenery and simply be in love with all living beings.   Hope this brings you some peace and even more resolve to protect life on the planet.  Enjoy. Confessions of an Overzealous Green Building Advocate

Do you ever find yourself so deeply entrenched in your beliefs that you miss a bigger picture?  It’s safe to say we all do.  Recently, I had a chance to speak with a lovely lady who had purchased a fantastically green home.  The house had all the latest in green building like engineered lumber, sustainable materials, non-toxic finishes and many other bells and whistles.  You can imagine that my eyes sparkled like a five year old’s at a sight of an ice-cream truck.  Meeting her filled me with much excitement.

My first questions obviously were:  “So how do you like it?  Does it feel good to have a low carbon footprint?  Don’t you just love your solar water heater?”  I was expecting to hear something profound like: ”Wow, we love the fact how much less wood was used to construct this house, how much stronger it is because of engineered lumber, how low the heating bills were,” you know…, the standard stuff that we greenies get jazzed up about.  But you know what her answer was? “It’s nice; we love the quality of the floors and are very comfortable here.”

My jaw dropped.  “What?” uninvited but silent thoughts started creeping in, “She’s got to be kidding… this home should be like a Lincoln monument for green building and all she cares about is bamboo floors… For the sake of the planet, what’s wrong with her!?”

Needless to say, this was puzzling as hell but on the way back home it dawned on me (more…)

The Most Convincing Scientific Graph You Will Ever See

Many times people you’ll meet will be skeptics of your ambitions to live a green lifestyle and protect the planet.  They may say some scientists do not support the theory of climate change, some may say we humans are not the cause of it and some may be… well, lackadaisical.

Please share with them this highly scientific, carefully drafted decision making graph that may help them understand the picture.  If you were in a driving seat and saw these signs, would you keep going?

Ancient Wisdom: The Biggest Climate Enemy is NOT the Greenhouse Gases

Image is by a wonderful artist: Misha Gordin. You can enjoy more at bsimple.com

Can you imagine what would happen if the entire world, from the poorest to the wealthiest, would wake up tomorrow with one single thought in mind: “Yes, the planet’s ecosystems are in peril, I have contributed to it but I can also make things better because my actions matter.  From now on this is a priority.”

What would happen to the world in one year after we woke up with that one thought and took action?  What about five years?  How would it feel to breathe clean air in our cities and sustain ourselves without depleting earth’s natural resources?  While we could only speculate, it is invigorating to even give it a thought.  But what’s even more entertaining is how, while trying to imagine this Pandora like, new world, our minds have already spit out the most potent green house gasses of them all –  doubt.

In the age where many are paralyzed by apathy towards climate change one can blame nothing but doubt.  Doubt is a product that we get for free these days either on TV, newspapers, the internet and from our less joyful friends.  But do we ever think what could be the real cost of doubt?

Recently, while reading a wonderful book called Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, I came across wise words from a Buddhist teacher with a name of Sogyal Rinpoche.  These were the most powerful and illuminating words about the nature of doubt that I have ever heard.  He said:

“Our minds are riddled and confused with doubt.  I sometimes think that doubt is the greatest block to human evolution.  Our society promotes cleverness instead of wisdom, and celebrates the most superficial, harsh, and least useful aspects of our intelligence.  We have become so falsely (more…)

The Heck with Climate Scientists, the Heck with the Nae Sayers, and One Huge Reason We Must Care Anyways

Some times weapons are our only hope for piece.

Sometimes weapons are our only hope for peace.

As the talks in Copenhagen are picking up momentum and the “Climate-Gate” scandal is unfolding, more and more people get perplexed and raise good questions.  Is this thing real?  Why would the scientists try to hide something or mislead us?

In situations like these our human nature and its subtle expressions become very obvious.  It’s fascinating to observe two sets of beliefs and convictions.  One group says Yeh!, the other group says Nae!, and then there is a silent majority who are waiting to be nudged in the right direction.

Why the mainstream media is over-inflating the climate scandal instead of focusing on real scientific numbers is probably beyond all of us but a one thing is certain: we’ll see some very positive and some very negative outcomes of this “Climate-Gate” fiasco.

Some immediate effects are obvious – scientists will have to be more transparent, disclose sources of data and be able to back up their finding with sound and undisputable reasons.  Climate change and data that supports it ought to be visible and open to our scrutiny, it’s that simple.  There is no doubt that when all dust settles, we will still have an overwhelming amount of research showing the planet is indeed warming and we are unequivocally contributing to it more than ever.

At the same time, doubts in the process and questionable ethics of the science community only fueled the skeptics and fed more excuses to folks who never cared about the issue in the first place.  The creepy part is that people like Sarah Palin will latch on to this piece of news like a bulldog and will keep mauling it on the media, further spreading doubt and apathy among those who don’t lack it already.  You know what separates Sarah Palin from a Pit-bull?  Nope not lipstick (more…)
